Graceful timeless style with extra sophistication.  This iron bed is beautiful with restrained graceful scrollwork showcasing wonderful floral castings along with complementary brass touches.  Antique cast iron and brass beds have a way of fitting in perfectly to whatever decorating style you use!  They work in farmhouses, contemporary homes, rustic settings, midcentury modern, minimalist, and the list goes on and on.

It has been refinished by sandblasting off the old lead paint and then baking on a powder coat clear finish in a satin sheen. Because the castings take longer to cool after the baking process, they have a slightly different, warm tone to them.

The castings are very crisp which indicates this was a fairly early run of these particular molds. Over time, the wood molds lose their sharpness as they come into contact with the sand casting into which the molten iron is poured.

Queen size beds did not come into mainstream use until the 1960s.  This handmade metal bed started out as a 3/4 size (48" wide) and has been stretched out to 60." The side rails have been lengthened to accommodate a modern day queen size mattress. Except for the long horizontal brass pieces, all the brass is antique.

A standard height box spring and mattress would work with this antique bed, however, you might find the mattress fairly high.  Some people love this look while others prefer a lower height.  We usually recommend using a 2" box spring called a 'posture board' (also known as a 'bunkie board.')  The posture board makes this iron and brass bed sit at about the same height as modern beds.

For perspective, in my pictures the top of the bedding sits at about 28" high or 14" above the side rail.  This would be roughly equivalent to using a 2" posture board and a 12" plush mattress.

This iron bed was handmade before the start of World War One.  When the war started in 1914, production of cast iron beds dropped significantly because iron was diverted for the war effort.  After the war, metal beds were mass produced in aluminum, a much easier and lighter metal to work with.

Side rails and cross supports are included.

Bedding and accessories are not included.

    Headboard:  59.5";  Footboard:  35";  Width:  60";  Drop:  14"
